8 simple skin care tips for glowing, healthy skin
Cleansers, hydration, exfoliation and the everyday habits that make the biggest difference
Skincare shouldn’t give you a headache
The idea of glowing, flawless skin is so appealing! If you’re anything like us, you get confused by the number of choices and the viral products you’ve never heard of. So let’s keep it simple: cleanse properly, use fewer products, avoid heavy fragrance, keep your hands off your face, stay hydrated, protect your skin, exfoliate gently and keep your brushes clean.
Choose the right cleanser
A cleanser removes makeup, dead skin and excess oil, so it’s essential. The right type depends on your skin type (not sure? find your skin type here):
- Oily or acne-prone skin: salicylic gel or benzoyl peroxide
- Mature skin: a moisturising glycolic or milky cleanser
- Brown spots: an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser
We personally recommend using two different cleansers to make sure your skin is properly clean.
Products, products, products…
Layering too many products can clog your pores and lead to breakouts, and excess products can be harsh on your skin. Keep your routine simple.
Oh, the smell of some products
Everyone loves something that smells great, and it can instantly lift your mood, but let’s leave the fragrance to your perfume! Heavily fragranced products can irritate your skin.
Where have your hands been?
Your hands touch everything, from your desk to your drink cups to door handles everyone else touches. If you use the same hands to touch your face, you spread bacteria around it, which can lead to breakouts.
Hydration is key
We all hear that you should drink water, and it’s true. Hydrating your skin with creams is always a good idea, but you can’t beat hydrating from the inside out. Being dehydrated can leave skin looking less radiant. Dry skin needs extra help: see our dry skin tips and our guide to the best toner for dry skin.
Suntan… love the heat?
We love to soak up the sun, and that glow looks amazing, but always protect your skin with SPF. Did you know the heat from heaters and fireplaces can also cause issues? It can lead to inflammation and collagen breakdown, so enjoy the warmth and stay cosy… from a distance.
Exfoliate, or not to exfoliate?
Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and leaves your skin glowing. A pH-neutral exfoliant works without drying your skin out. Once a week is plenty, and over-exfoliating will leave your skin sore. For a professional option, try dermaplaning.
How much did your makeup brushes cost?
You’ve spent your money on the best brushes for the look you want, so clean them weekly. Brushes easily carry bacteria and can cause infections and clogged pores. You don’t need anything fancy: put a few drops of mild shampoo (baby shampoo is great) in your hand, wet the brush and swirl it until the water runs clear. Repeat, rinsing in between, then leave the brushes to dry flat so the bristles keep their shape. See our full guide to cleaning makeup brushes.
