You've probably seen the "lip flip" on social media — but what is it? It's a popular non-surgical treatment that uses a small dose of anti-wrinkle injection to give the top lip a fuller appearance, without changing the size of your lips. You keep your natural lip shape.

What is a lip flip, and how does it work?
Anti-wrinkle treatment is best known for forehead lines and crow's feet — but it can be used on the lips too. A lip flip is a non-surgical way to give fuller-looking lips while keeping your natural size and shape.
A small dose of botulinum toxin is placed around the cupid's bow and the corners of the mouth. As the upper lip muscle relaxes, the lip rolls — or "flips" — gently outward, so a little more of the lip shows and it appears fuller.
Unlike lip filler, nothing is added for volume — it's a subtle change that works with your own lips rather than reshaping them.
Who is a lip flip for?
A lip flip suits adults in good general health who'd like a subtle, natural enhancement of the upper lip without the added volume of filler. It's a great option if you want to keep your natural lip size and prefer a quick, non-surgical treatment with no downtime.
It isn't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if certain medical conditions apply (the full list is further down the page). That's why every treatment starts with a consultation — so we can check it's right for you, answer your questions and set realistic expectations before anything goes ahead.
Looking after your results
- Stay upright for around 4 hours after your treatment.
- Avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the lips for 24 hours.
- Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
- Avoid heat treatments — saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds — for about 2 weeks.
- Hold off on lipstick or makeup over the area for a few hours.
- Results develop over 3–14 days, so be patient at first.

Before & after your treatment
What to expect
After your treatment you may notice some stinging or slight bruising where the needle was placed. These effects are temporary and settle quickly.
Anti-wrinkle injections take several days to take full effect, so don't worry if you don't see a change in the first few days — this is normal.
How to prepare
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your treatment.
- Let us know about any prescribed or non-prescribed medication you're taking.
- Avoid over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen for 48 hours beforehand.
Who shouldn't have this treatment
This treatment isn't suitable if any of the following apply. If unsure, please ask during your consultation:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Hypertrophic or keloid scarring
- Bleeding abnormalities (e.g. anticoagulant use or thrombocytopenia)
- Active skin condition in the area (e.g. eczema or psoriasis)
- Active infection in the area (e.g. herpes simplex or pustular acne)
- Impaired healing (e.g. due to immunosuppression)
- Skin atrophy (e.g. chronic oral steroid use, or syndromes such as Ehlers-Danlos)
- Sensitivity or allergy to botulinum toxin or its constituents, or a milk allergy with certain products
- Neuromuscular disorders (e.g. ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, myasthenia gravis or myopathies)
- Gross motor weakness in the area (e.g. Bell's palsy or stroke)
- Uncontrolled systemic conditions
- Medications that may potentiate the effect (e.g. aminoglycosides, quinine, calcium-channel blockers, penicillamine)
- Unrealistic expectations or body dysmorphic disorder
- Periocular or ocular surgery in the last 6 months
