If you feel your smile shows too much of your gums and teeth, you may have what's known as a gummy smile. There's no strict definition — it's largely about how you feel when you smile — and if it makes you hold back, a simple anti-wrinkle treatment can help.

What is a gummy smile, and what causes it?
A gummy smile is when a noticeable amount of gum shows above your teeth as you smile, often with the top lip appearing quite slim. There's no fixed medical definition — it comes down to how balanced your smile feels to you.
It's usually caused by the upper lip muscles lifting the lip higher than average when you smile. A small dose of botulinum toxin is placed above the cupid's bow to relax those muscles, so the top lip doesn't rise as far — showing less gum and giving the lip a slightly fuller, softer look.
Who is gummy smile treatment for?
This treatment suits adults in good general health who feel their smile shows too much gum and want a subtle, natural adjustment rather than a dramatic change. It's a great option if you'd prefer a quick, non-surgical treatment with no downtime.
It isn't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if certain medical conditions apply (the full list is further down the page). Looking after your results
- Stay upright for around 4 hours after your treatment.
- Avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the area for 24 hours.
- Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
- Avoid heat treatments — saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds — for about 2 weeks.
- Hold off on makeup over the area for a few hours.
- Results develop over 3–14 days, so be patient at first.

Before & after your treatment
What to expect
After your treatment you may notice some stinging or slight bruising where the needle was placed. These effects are temporary and settle quickly.
Anti-wrinkle injections take several days to take full effect, so don't worry if you don't see a change in the first few days — this is normal.
How to prepare for your treatment
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before your treatment.
- Let us know about any prescribed or non-prescribed medication you're taking.
- Avoid over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen for 48 hours beforehand.
Who shouldn't have anti-wrinkle treatment
This treatment isn't suitable if any of the following apply. If unsure, please ask during your consultation:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Hypertrophic or keloid scarring.
- Bleeding abnormalities (e.g. anticoagulant use or thrombocytopenia).
- Active skin condition in the area (e.g. eczema or psoriasis).
- Active infection in the area (e.g. herpes simplex or pustular acne).
- Impaired healing (e.g. due to immunosuppression).
- Skin atrophy (e.g. chronic oral steroid use, or syndromes such as Ehlers-Danlos).
- Sensitivity or allergy to botulinum toxin or its constituents, or a milk allergy with certain products.
- Neuromuscular disorders (e.g. ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, myasthenia gravis or myopathies).
- Gross motor weakness in the area (e.g. Bell's palsy or stroke).
- Uncontrolled systemic conditions.
- Medications that may potentiate the effect (e.g. aminoglycosides, quinine, calcium-channel blockers, penicillamine).
- Unrealistic expectations or body dysmorphic disorder.
- Periocular or ocular surgery in the last 6 months.
