Platelet Rich Plasma

benefits of a vampire facial!

The Glam Fairies break down the benefits of platelet rich plasma treatment in the skin. When you first hear the term ‘platelet rich plasma’, you may be put off by the idea of undergoing this aesthetic procedure.

You may have also heard the term ‘vampire facials’, which again makes the process sound faddish and off-putting. This term was coined because, you guessed it, platelet rich plasma is derived from blood.

However, the treatment is a lot more natural and a lot less scary than it sounds! The growth facts are here to lay down the facts, features, and benefits to allow you to make an informed decision.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Used For?

By its very nature, platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment can bring overall skin rejuvenation wherever it is applied, by encouraging the growth of natural collagen. This makes it ideal for many medical applications as well as treating:

  • Uneven complexion or skin tone
  • Pigmentation issues
  • Dull skin
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Thinning hair and hair loss

As well as most recently being used for these aesthetic purposes, platelet rich plasma has been used as a hospital-grade treatment since the 1970s. In treating arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders, PRP has improved the quality of life and helped to reduce the pain in patients for over 40 years.

What are Platelets?

Platelets are literally the active growth factor that repairs and heals your skin and tissue when injured or damaged. They also stimulate collagen growth, something that declines naturally in our skin as we get older.

What’s the PRP Process?

The concentration of platelets in PRP is derived by spinning a small amount of your blood in a centrifuge machine and then spun at a high speed. All the platelets, the active growth factor in PRP, are then pushed aside to be easily collected.

What Are the Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma?

PRP injections contain higher strength of growth factors than growth factors naturally found in your blood, which means you’re able to utilise this further by reinjecting or microneedling this back into problematic areas. Benefits include:

  • Tighter, Firmer Skin
  • Releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces
  • Provides total rejuvenation
  • Helps with hair loss
  • Improved Moisture Retention
  • Increased Collagen Production
  • Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles
  • Enhanced Skin Tone and Texture

How to Prepare for PRP Treatment

Although the platelet rich plasma treatment process is relatively straightforward, like any medical procedure, there are important preparations you will need to bare in mind prior to treatment:

  • Do not take corticosteroid medications for 2 to 3 weeks prior to the procedure
  • Avoid taking aspirin, iburopfen, arthritis medication, or steroid medication – check with your G.P before stopping any medication
  • Drink plenty of water before your treatment  – PRP loves hydration!
